Member Monthly

Editor's message - January 2024

Welcome to the first Member Monthly of 2024. I'm never sure about the etiquette of when it's too late to wish people a Happy New Year, but I hope 2024 has started well for you.

It's been a hectic start for many of our members, especially those working in shipping, where the Red Sea crisis has escalated dramatically, or those busy with preparations for the UK's new Border Target Operating Model (BTOM), the first phase of which starts at the end of this month.

In response to feedback from members, we've evolved the content of these newsletters to include more practical, member-exclusive insights from IOE&IT experts and our partner organisations, alongside the interviews and updates from members. In this issue, we hear from Laura Williams on what you need to know about BTOM.

January is also a popular month for learning and developing. So, also in this issue, several fellow members share thoughts on and experience of the IOE&IT training in trade and how it has helped boost their careers.

We also get the view from the front of the lecture theatre, with an interview with Warwick University senior trade academics, Dr Di Li and Dr Rebecca Wilde.

Finally, there's another new start this month for IOE&IT, as we switch many of our systems across to a new, integrated platform. We're excited about how it will allow us to better meet our members' needs. However, there may be a few teething troubles towards the end of January and you may not be able to access some areas of the website. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience you experience as a result.

Enjoy reading.
