Are the Institute's qualifications recognised nationally and globally?

IOE&IT is a recognised awarding organisation, with the Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications regulated by Ofqual, and all IOE&IT qualifications recognised nationally and globally.

Will the Institute consider previous learning and work experience?

Exemption(s) may apply. Previous qualifications must cover the same learning outcomes as the syllabus of our subject and be of an equivalent level. Exemptions are decided by the Academic Board. An exemption application, with all relevant information such as previous certificates, course credits, transcripts, breakdowns and course content, may be included with the student registration form.

Do I need to be a member of the Institute to study for a qualification?

Student membership is the minimum required to study. Existing members of the Institute are not required to pay separately for a student registration. An existing individual membership (higher membership types recognise international trade experience) makes student level membership unnecessary.
Existing IOE&IT members must still have their qualifications and experience checked to confirm that they meet the entry requirements of the qualification.

I'm based overseas; will I still be able to study for one of the Institute's qualifications?

Yes, international students are welcome.

Is there a time limit on how long I take to complete the qualifications?

Course have to be completed in 4 years, unless otherwise agreed.

Is there any financial assistance available?

Career Development Loans and Advanced Learner Loans are available. The Education Funding Agency can provide support for students aged 16 -19 years.

Can I just study for part of a qualification?

Yes, you can take individual modules from our Level 3 Certificate in International Trade, Level 4 Diploma in International Trade, Level 5 Diploma in International Trade and Level 5 Dipoma in World Customs Compliance and Regulations qualifications please contact us for more information.

Our Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme and Knowledge in Bite Size Chunks are also available, and allow specific subjects to be selected.

What qualifications do I need for the different grades of membership?

They receive the majority of benefits offered to other membership grades. You can join today using this level of membership.

Are there set start dates for the qualifications?

IOE&IT distance learning is flexible, and is not set to run with enrolment groups achieving the qualification in the same set turnaround. Schedules are individual and students (in agreement with sponsoring employers) decide when to enter as an assessment candidate. Homework assignments help students evaluate when to enter each subject of their qualification.

Tuition is available for up to four years as long as membership is renewed, though is not expected to take that long.

What is distance learning? Will I get any support during my studies?

IOE&IT’s distance learning course includes tuition and comprehension notes. Distance Learning reading material is designed to cover the syllabus of the Institute’s qualifications. Distance tutoring allows queries to aid understanding the syllabus, phone calls with tutors may be pre-arranged; special enquiries and homework may be submitted electronically.

Additional revision material is given in the form of specimen answers after each marked homework assignment is returned. Homework is not compulsory, it is a benefit offered with the Institute’s distance learning course so that the students interact with the tutors and develop answer techniques to demonstrate their knowledge.

Studying one of the IOE&IT’s qualifications through Distance Learning is flexible not tied to a bulk enrolment group that would prepare individuals to achieve the qualification in the same set turnaround; it is individual to the student.

Mature students are encouraged to set targets for when to enter Assessments for each module. A study planner and access to past papers are available. Students (in agreement with sponsoring employers) decide when to enter as an assessment candidate because there is not a set study term.

Homework assignments help students evaluate when they want to enter the end test for each subject of the qualification so that they may achieve the qualification in their desired time scale. Tuition is available for up to four years as long as membership is renewed; we do not expect study to take that long, see suggested hours of study. Committing to realistic turnaround and a plan when to enter exam/assessments will help anticipate what budget is required and control the cost.
