Anna Doherty, Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade Customs Practice director, said:
“Autonomous tariff suspensions allow businesses to apply for a reduction/removal of the third country duty for the specific products that they import, which are not easily obtainable domestically and which may not be subject to reduction in duty through other preferential arrangements.”
“These are usually ingredients or low-level parts which are needed to manufacture a finished product in the UK, or which will be further processed or assembled in the UK.
“Examples include chemical components, aluminium ingots, car parts or frozen fruit concentrates or fruit puree.”
In the last duty suspension window, 96 applications for 170 products were submitted. These suspensions will last until 30 June 2027, with a possibility of an extension after a review.
The current duty suspensions and quotes can be found using the government’s Trade Tariff lookup tool.
