The rules around movement of goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland are set to change at the end of the transition period from the start of 2021.
At the request of Invest Northern Ireland, the region’s business development agency, the Institute of Export & International Trade is to host a webinar next week to help local businesses in the province prepare for different scenarios.
Hosted by the Institute’s director of stakeholder engagement Kevin Shakespeare, the webinar will cover:
- Supply chain management
- The UK global import tariff
- Movement of goods from NI to the Irish Republic, including requirements for customs declarations
- Differences in trade with the Republic of Ireland, Great Britain, the EU and the Rest of the World
“As further detail of how the protocol will work for trade is still being worked out, this masterclass will cover the potential direction of travel, covering scenarios on customs, and importantly product and regulatory compliance,” Shakespeare said.
Key verticals such as agrifoods and medical devices will also be covered.
Shakespeare added that “with our industry and government links, the Institute’s courses are able to cover the end-to-end journey for goods beyond customs, from concept to delivery”.

Government questionnaire
Earlier today (Thursday 10 June) the government issued a short questionnaire to UK businesses, to help it identify those that currently move goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Questions include how firms plan to process movement of goods after the transition period ends, for instance in they intend to use third parties.
