Welcoming the appointment of Andy Burnham as the UK’s new prime minister and Jonathan Reynolds as the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, the director general of the Chartered Institute of Export and International Trade, Marco Forgione, said:
“We congratulate both Andy Burnham on becoming the country’s new prime minister and Jonathan Reynolds on his appointment as Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade and look forward to working closely with both in supporting UK businesses trading around the world. It is our pleasure to welcome Jonathan back into the role.
“They inherit an increasingly complex global trading environment. The UK is likely to face new US tariffs under section 301 and 232 tariff regimes, expected to be announced this week. All this turbulence, along with the UK-EU reset, the conflict in Ukraine, the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing supply chain disruption, creates pressures for international trade and the UK. In this context it’s essential that trade doesn’t become sidelined in this new larger department.
“To effectively navigate these challenges, the new PM and the secretary of state must work closely with business.
“Any ten-year plan for Britain must be grounded in continued ambition and action for increasing trade growth. We will be engaging closely with the new administration to drive this vision forward and to help businesses adapt to changing market conditions, maximising export opportunities and strengthening the UK’s long-term economic resilience.”
