Lord Green of Hurstpierpoint has today (19 November 20025) announced that he will step down from his role as honorary president of the Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade after eight years of service.
Lord Green, who took on the role in 2017, was speaking at the Chartered Institute’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) this morning.
He was thanked by both the organisation’s chair, Terry Scuoler CBE MCIEx, and its director general, Marco Forgione MCIEx.
Guidance during change
“I am extremely grateful for the wise counsel and guidance I’ve had from Lord Green since I joined the Chartered Institute in 2020,” Forgione told the Daily Update.
“Since 2017, the Chartered Institute has undergone tremendous change. It grew significantly in response to the UK’s changing needs post-Brexit, it has modernised its educational and advisory services, and it has made inroads into Europe and Africa.
“Throughout this period, the Chartered Institute has also raised professional standards among those working in international trade, particularly in the UK. These efforts culminated in the Institute being granted its Royal Charter in 2023.
“Lord Green has played a significant role in enabling this success and growth.”
Speaking at the AGM, Scuoler added that he wanted to thank Lord Green on behalf of the board and the Chartered Institute’s members.
Scuoler said that the board will announce Lord Green’s successor in the spring next year.
AGM resolutions
At the AGM, Rinat Abdrasilov was elected to serve as a new trustee director on the Chartered Institute’s board.
Abdrasilov is a strategy and digital transformation consultant who also serves as independent non-executive chairman at UkrProduct Group and as a senior partner at Cambridge Management Consulting.
John Alty was also re-elected to a second three-year term on the board.
Alty is a non-executive director at the UK’s Trade Remedies Authority and a visiting professor at the London School of Economics. He was previously the director general of trade policy at the Department for International Trade between 2016 and 2021.
Lord Green expressed gratitude to Dominic Broom and Steve McQuillan, who have now concluded their terms as Trustees.
Members also voted for membership prices to remain at current prices for the fifth year in a row.
90th celebration
The AGM took place ahead of the Chartered Institute’s annual industry conference, the Import Export Show, which you can read more about in today’s ‘Day in Trade’ digest.
Both events fell the day after the Chartered Institute turned 90 years old. In a blog published to mark this milestone, Forgione yesterday wrote:
“The Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade was founded in 1935, against a backdrop of rising trade protectionism and global economic uncertainty, with a mission to advocate for the value of open trade.
“Today marks the 90th anniversary of our formation, and our mission remains as relevant as ever, with tariffs, geopolitical competition and technological disruption at the forefront of today’s agenda.”
