Exports minister Mike Freer will visit the UK pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai to promote the government’s Export Strategy to international business leaders attending the show.

The new strategy – published at the end of last year – aims to boost annual UK exports to £1 trillion by 2030.

Freer will join culture secretary Nadine Dorries attending the Expo on ‘UK National Day’.

Connectivity and innovation

More than 190 countries are taking part in Expo 2020 Dubai, which began on 1 October 2021 and will finish on 31 March 2022, having been postponed due to the pandemic.

Millions of visitors are expected at the Expo and with 70% of visitors expected to be international, it presents a significant opportunity to promote the UK as a global hub of innovation and a leading destination for trade.

The theme of the event is ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’.

Under the theme ‘Innovating for a Shared Future’, the UK’s participation is being led by the Department for International Trade.

The UK pavilion will host business, cultural, tourism and education events programmes and highlight leading British expertise in sectors including artificial intelligence and space.

Gulf focus

Freer will be talking to the business community attending the exhibition and he will aim to promote UK exports to Gulf and other international business leaders, a government statement said.

The announcement comes as the DIT’s public consultation on negotiations for a new trade deal with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) comes to an end.

UK National Day

UK National Day will provide a taste of what the UK has to offer the world including music, sport, poetry, puppets, dance and food.

Nadine Dorries said: “2022 is set to be an incredible year of celebration for the UK, with three amazing global events on home soil. The arrival of the Queen’s Baton Relay in Dubai will help build excitement about Birmingham 2022, the Platinum Jubilee and Unboxed.”

The Queen’s Baton Relay is promoting the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games while the ‘Unboxed: Creativity in the UK’ showcase aims to drive international tourism, trade and investment into the UK.
