As the Tokyo 2020 Olympics emerges on our horizons, new figures from the Office for National Statistics show UK exports to Japan are rocketing, totaling £15 billion in the year to September 2019.

Japan is the UK’s 11 largest export market and demand for British goods and services continues to soar, with exports growing by 32% over the last five years.

With the Olympics a major factor, alongside last year’s Rugby World Cup, it is no surprise that the sports industry has been one of the main beneficiaries of this export boom. Sports equipment exports alone have doubled over the past three and a half year.

International Trade Secretary, Liz Truss said:

“It’s great to see British businesses selling more of their great products to Japan. It is an important and lucrative market for the UK. On January 31, we will be free to determine our own future and form partnerships with old allies and new friends.

“We will create even more opportunities for business to begin.”

The Department for International Trade are running a webinar with Export to Japan about how to grow exports to Japan through ecommerce platforms like Amazon JP. You can register to the webinar on 19 February here.

Export to Japan is a not-for-profit organisation that was formed in July 2013. They are a unique partnership between the Department for International Trade, the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan, British Airways and Business Link Japan.

We also ran an Open to Export webinar on exporting to Japan with Export to Japan in 2018, which you can watch below. They answered the following questions on the Open to Export website:
