The issue of customs competency has gained focus over recent months, as a result of the introduction of the Union Customs Code (UCC) and Brexit negotiations.

The UCC has placed greater emphasis on Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status as the benchmark for companies wishing to take advantage of customs and supply chain simplifications and reduced customs guarantee requirements.

AEO status is likely to become significant in facilitating fast-track customs procedures in a post-Brexit custom environment. Yet, the UK currently lags way behind its soon-to-be European competitors in the number of AEO accredited companies it boasts. Compared to Germany, which has over 6000 companies with AEO status, the UK only has around 600. Given that UK companies will soon be competing against companies from countries like Germany for position in International supply chains, this is something that needs to be rectified in the coming years.

Consequently, the Diploma in World Customs Compliance and Regulations, offered by the IOE&IT has gained particular relevance.

Any businesses wishing to apply for status as Authorised Economic Operators, must demonstrate that the person in charge of customs matters meets a standard of competence in customs matters. The Diploma provides a badge of competency in all relevant aspects of global, EU and UK customs regulations, and is delivered by the Institute of Export & International Trade who are Ofqual accredited and recognised internationally for the quality of their delivery.

Previous students who have completed the Diploma in World Customs Compliance & Regulations said:

“The Diploma in World Customs Compliance and Regulations covers every aspect of customs compliance that I deal with and has given me a much deeper understanding of the policies that we have to follow. Using this information, I have been able to engage with relevant departments across the company to gain their support, improving our compliance along the way.”
Karen Coventry, Boots Group plc

“Since undertaking a review of Tax Compliance, I have been fortunate to take on the role of the Departmental Customs Compliance and Policy subject matter expert. I wanted to gain a recognised qualification to assist me in implementing new Customs Policy and Processes and begin driving efficiencies.

The Diploma in World Customs Compliance and Regulations course content could not have been a better fit. Each module was directly linked to my work. The course has helped me to develop internal policy and processes and oversee the implementation of compliance regimes for the department and work with delegated points of contact across the business to provide guidance and embed best practice.”
