Qualifications FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about study with the Institute of Export

How do the Institute's qualifications compare with other qualifications?

The IOE is an awarding body with the Qualifications Credit Framework, and the Qualifications Curriculum Authority. The QCF ‘levels’ allow comparison of IOE qualifications:

Young International Trader (YIT) - NVQ Level 1

COAST Introduction - NVQ Level 2

COAST Intermediate - NVQ Level 3

Certificate in International Trade (CIT) - NVQ Level 3

Certified International Trade Advisor (CITA) - NVQ Level 3

Advanced Certificate in International Trade (ACIT) - NVQ Level 4

Diploma in International Trade (DIT) - NVQ Level 5

Foundation Degree (FdA) - NVQ Level 6.

Are the Institute's qualifications recognised nationally and globally?

IOE is a recognised awarding body, regulated by Ofqual, and all IOE qualifications are recognised nationally and globally

Will the Institute consider previous learning and work experience?

Exemption/s may apply. Previous qualifications must cover the same learning outcomes as the syllabus of our subject and be of an equivalent level. Exemptions are decided by the Professional Qualifications Education Board. An exemption application, with all relevant information such as previous certificates, course credits, transcripts, breakdowns and course content, may be included with the student registration form.

Do I need to be a member of the Institute to study for a qualification?

Student membership is the minimum required to study. Existing IOE members are not required to pay separately for a student registration. An existing individual membership (higher membership types recognise international trade experience) makes student level membership unnecessary, Existing IOE members must still have their qualifications and experience checked to confirm that they meet the entry requirements of the qualification.

Are there set start dates for the qualifications?

IOE distance learning is flexible, and is not set to run with enrolment groups achieving the qualification in the same set turnaround. Schedules are individual and students (in agreement with sponsoring employers) decide when to enter as an assessment candidate. Homework assignments help students evaluate when to enter each subject of their qualification. Tuition is available for up to four years as long as membership is renewed, though is not expected to take that long.

What is distance learning? Will I get any support during my studies?

IOE’s distance learning course includes tuition and comprehension notes. Distance Learning reading material is designed to cover the syllabus of the IOE’s qualifications. Distance tutoring allows queries to aid understanding the syllabus, phone calls with tutors may be pre-arranged; special enquiries and homework may be submitted electronically.

Additional revision material is given in the form of specimen answers after each marked homework assignment is returned. Homework is not compulsory it is a benefit offered with the IOE’s distance learning course so that the students interact with the tutors and develop answer techniques to demonstrate their knowledge.

Studying one of the IOE’s qualifications through Distance Learning is flexible not tied to a bulk enrolment group that would prepare individuals to achieve the qualification in the same set turnaround; it is individual to the student

Mature students are encouraged to set targets for when to enter Assessments for each module. A study planner and access to past papers are available. Students (in agreement with sponsoring employers) decide when to enter as an assessment candidate because there is not a set study term.

Homework assignments help students evaluate when they want to enter the end test for each subject of the qualification so that they may achieve the qualification in their desired time scale. Tuition is available for up to four years as long as membership is renewed; we do not expect study to take that long, see suggested hours of study. Committing to realistic turnaround and a plan when to enter exam/assessments will help anticipate what budget is required and control the cost.

International trade and logistics involves the buying and selling of goods internationally. This qualification introduces you to the different aspects of trade and focuses on shipping – the process that enables goods to travel from 'A to B'.

Description

This qualification is designed to introduce you to selected key concepts of international trade and the shipping process (i.e. importing and exporting, shipping documentation, methods of payment, the roles of the different parties involved and basic shipping law), and to help you develop learning skills, which will provide a sound basis for further work. Students Testimonials

"Studying with the Institute of Export and International Trade has been valuable in increasing my knowledge and understanding of the complexities of international trade. Modules cover all important aspects of trading internationally and cover key facts in detail while putting them into context using real-life examples. These are qualifications that employers recognise and value and obtaining these qualifications has greatly assisted my career."

Kate Willars

"I found the knowledge that I gained was of immediate use when a company asked me about how they should handle their currency transactions, to enable them to make a competitive bid for a European Contract. I was able to provide some insight as to their options, and they were both grateful for the advice and surprised at the level of specific knowledge available from my organisation."

Terry Ferguson

"Having recently graduated at Credit level in the Advanced Certificate in International Trade, I have to comment on how helpful and informative I found the Institute of Export's online learning site. An excellent site is a must when studying remotely and a great channel too for comparing notes with others in the same learning environment".

Continuing Professional Development

The IOE Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme supports its mission “to enhance the international performance of the United Kingdom by setting and raising professional standards in International Trade Management practice”

The CPD programme allows members of the IOE to maintain and develop their knowledge, skills and competence, systematically throughout their career within international trade. In addition to recognising the development of a member’s technical knowledge, the IOE CPD programme takes into account the enhancement of the practical skills, which are required to operate effectively and professionally within the International trade arena

Why should I complete a CPD programme?

  • A membership category exists which will allow you to add (CPD) to your existing qualification i.e. MIEx (CPD). You will also receive a CPD certificate for each year you complete the CPD programme as evidence of your professional development
  • Associate members who complete three consecutive years of CPD activity will be eligible to upgrade to full membership on payment of the appropriate fees

What does the IOE CPD programme entail?

  • The IOE scheme requires a member to secure a minimum of 100 credits of activity each year. There are two parts to the credit points, these being ‘Contemporary Issues’ and ‘Other International related activities’. You must earn a minimum of 50% from Contemporary Issues and 50% from the Other Activities and other International trade related activities that you are involved with
  • In addition to completing your CPD record which is accessed via the member’s corner of the Institute’s website and logging into your personal CPD, it is recommended that you keep a detailed record of your activities as further information may be required to substantiate the award of your CPD certificate. You should record:
  • A brief description of the activity
  • Your intended learning outcomes
  • How you benefited from and / or applied the learning outcomes of your activity
  • Evidence of your activity
  • Your personal comments or observations

How are CPD credits recognised?

  • When you have attained your annual minimum of 100 credits, you should contact Export House so that verification can be carried out. In some cases Export House may request your file or logbook. Following approval you will be sent a certificate of achievement in recognition of your Professional Development. If you have not achieved the full 100 points you may still request an acknowledgement of the credits you have achieved
  • All IOE short courses and many other International Trade events will record the number of credits that have been awarded and that you are entitled to claim towards your CPD. When you attend an IOE short course you will be awarded a certificate from the organiser (by request) to add to your portfolio
