Summary

International trade and logistics involves the buying and selling of goods internationally. This qualification introduces you to the different aspects of trade and focuses on shipping – the process that enables goods to travel from 'A to B'.

Description

This qualification is designed to introduce you to selected key concepts of international trade and the shipping process (i.e. importing and exporting, shipping documentation, methods of payment,the roles of the different parties involved and basic shipping law), and to help you develop learning skills, which will provide a sound basis for further work. It will give you an opportunity,whatever your plans, to learn ways of thinking that allow a better understanding of shipping and the shipping process as a whole.

The qualification materials have been produced with the needs of new learners in mind. They assume no special knowledge and no experience of studying. Taking examples from every aspect of the shipping process, they enable you to build up a picture of how shipping works and how different jobs in the industry connect together to make up the whole shipping process. Features of the qualification include:

• Lectures and workshops including on-line (virtual learning)to help you understand the qualification subjects;,
• Telephone/e-mail support, so you keep in touch with your tutor;
• Assignments with on-line self test quizzes which you will have to complete for each aspect of the qualification, to prove that you have understood each subject;
• An Examination*, either online or paper based to achieve the qualification

*Examinations are optional, but are required if you wish to achieve the full COAST Level 2 Qualification. By sitting an online examination you will achieve the COAST Level 2 Certificate. By sitting an invigilated paper-based exam at one of registered centres (contact us for details) you will achieve the COAST Level 2 Diploma.

• Ship’s Agency
• Ports and Cargoes
• Dangerous Goods
• The Export Process with Customs Clearance
• The Import Process with Customs Clearance
• Road haulage
• Marine Insurance
• Revision, review of learning objectives and exam.

Entry

There are no entry requirements. The qualification is designed for students who have not studied before or who may have studied a long time ago. Qualifications

By completing assignments and a 60-minute examination, you can achieve the COAST Introduction Qualification. This qualification is an excellent base on which to build your knowledge, and will help you enter the International Trade and Logistics Operations NVQ Level 2 or the COAST Intermediate (Level 3) Qualification.

Assessment

An assessment score is used to determine whether or not you achieve the qualification. Your assessment score is based on two components:

• Your assignments, which are marked by your tutor. The results gained from your assignments form 50% of your overall assessment score;
• An examination. The result gained from your examination forms 50% of your overall assessment score. The examination can take place either online or paper based at an ITS centre.

Qualification starting dates and timing

• This qualification runs ,three times a year, January, April and September and is delivered over a six month period.
• In addition to elearning, a delivered version of this qualification operates in Felixstowe which includes face to face lectures. Please contact ITS for details.
