We congratulate the first tranche of students who have graduated from our Ofqual regulated Diploma in World Customs Compliance and Regulations – a UK first created by the Institute of Export in consultation with some of the world’s leading companies, including Nissan, Adidas, BAE Systems and John Lewis.

Launched late in 2013, this distance learning, online education programme provides a comprehensive and in-depth look at a range of topics in the field of customs compliance and regulation. Upon successful completion it leads to a full customs qualification at level 5 Diploma level – Year 2 of a degree.

Well done to Liz Sumner from Scott Health & Safety, Gavin Makowski from Global Trade Logistics Customs Support, Rachel Stockton from Sports Direct International, Amelia Vyse from Nissan Motors, Andrea Coleman from B & W Group, Mihaela Marin from Frances Clemnow and Arne Mielken from Amber Road who achieved the highest marks on the course.

Liz Sumner, Trade Compliance Manager EMEA at Scott Safety says the programmes benefits have been wide-reaching for both her and for the business.

“The course was interesting, educational and relevant to my international trade role and the business benefits have been immense. I now possess a thorough knowledge of customs history and processes and have a clear understanding of the changes that the new Union Customs Code will bring in 2016. I have been able to apply and share what I have learned with my colleagues, which has led to improved compliance within the business.

“I appreciated the excellent student support and guidance from the tutors. The time invested in undertaking the course was definitely worthwhile, both on a personal, professional and business level.”

Adds Amelia Vyse from Nissan: “The course was challenging throughout and motivating in the preparation of the Union Customs Code changes ahead. It also enabled me to develop my personal network through the introduction of forums and internet sites recognised globally.

“The Diploma is particularly applicable to my role as Customs Controller at Nissan which has been Britain’s biggest car producer since 1998, because it has helped me to understand how to communicate effectively with HMRC and where to source data material to assist with the import formalities in non EU countries to facilitate Nissan’s international trade.”

The Diploma covers worldwide and UK/European Union customs compliance and regulations – including how world customs are organised, the practical aspects of international customs procedures, EU customs code and international trade regulations.

It also focuses on EU customs tariffs and preferential trade agreements, HM Revenue & Customs and other controlling bodies, customs declarations and 3rd country customs procedures in the UK – giving a comprehensive introduction to all areas of world customs compliance.

Online lectures and workshops are used to teach course material, whilst graded assignments ensure that students have understood the subject matter. Students also have access to tutor support via telephone/e-mail.

Entry requirements include the successful completion of the Advanced Certificate in International Trade (ACIT), a degree from a recognised University and / or more than 5 years’ experience in international trade.

Feedback on the diploma has been superb and we have already welcomed a further 82 students onto the course.
