Apprenticeships

The apprenticeship programme provides proven benefits to both employers and apprentices.

For apprentices, it can equip them with the skills needed for a successful career and be a genuine alternative to going to university, or even an opportunity to combine an apprenticeship with higher education. Degree Apprenticeships have been developed as part of higher apprenticeship standards, seeing apprentices achieving a full Bachelor’s or Master’s degree as a core component of the apprenticeship.

Apprentices don’t have to pay anything for the apprenticeship course, it is funded by the government and their employer. In fact, all apprenticeships are real jobs so apprentices earn a salary. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage – and many employers pay significantly more.

For employers it can provide organisations with a competent, skilled work force. Training is specifically tailored to ensure apprentices develop the skills the employer wants, giving them a real advantage in the workplace.

Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study. As an apprentice you’ll:

                  * Work alongside experienced staff
  * Gain job-specific skills
  * Earn a wage and get holiday pay
  * Study towards a relevant qualification

 

 Apprenticeships take 1 to 4 years to complete depending on their level:

What’s changing?

The government has committed to deliver 3 million apprenticeships by 2020.

From April 2017, businesses with an annual pay bill of £3m+ have to pay 0.5% of their wage bill to the government (through PAYE) for an apprenticeship levy, regardless of whether they employ apprentices or not.

In return, employers will be provided with an allowance of £15,000 to offset against levy payments.

The levy will positively increase the number of apprenticeships as employers capitalise on their levy funding and look to increase their apprenticeship numbers or implement new schemes. Additionally, larger businesses are likely to ‘gravitate’ towards offering the higher level (degree) apprenticeships in order to fill skills gaps in their organisation.

You can apply for an apprenticeship when you’re 16 or over and not in full time education.
